The Last 6 Weeks
We have officially entered into the final 6 week grading period of the school year. I welcome these last weeks with open arms but also dread the amount of work they will bring forth. My senior students have decided that studying is no longer important and attendance is optional, but at the same time they can’t seem to understand why I would tell them they aren’t graduating. I hear, “What do you mean? I have all my credits.” Unfortunately, they forget that English, Government and Economics are required coursework no matter how many credits they have. I recall having this conversation with them earlier in the year (at least 3 times). But, what does one school counselor know?
The fact that parents feel differently about their child’s attendance and grades has resulted in many interventions between parent and child in my office. Some of them are not pretty. It’s always interesting when the parent believes that I have some magical power over their child and can wave my wand producing the compliance of completed homework assignments, a drug free life, and extreme motivation.
This time of year leaves my head spinning, not knowing if I am coming or going. I have a million lists of things to do but no time to even read them before the next crisis arises. I work day to day, early and late, flying by the seat of my pants. But, despite the long hours, manic parents, apathetic students and crazy teachers, I still love what I do and will continue to do it for years to come.
So, here’s to the last 6 weeks! Teachers, can I get an amen?
