My First Earthquake!

Posted in California Life at 9:26 pm by winz

Last night I experienced my very first earthquake and for Matt, the biggest of all since he has lived in the Bay Area.  About 8:18 last night Matt and I were snuggled up in our bed watching our favorite Thursday night television shows when the house began to shake.  It was very odd, at first the dresser across the room started to move and I was thinking hummm what’s making the dresser move, could it be one of the cats?  And then the bed started shaking.  I knew Matt wasn’t moving our bed but again I just couldn’t quite put it all together.  After about 5 seconds of everything shaking it all stopped.  Matt then said, “I think we just had an earthquake”.   The epicenter of the quake was in Lafayette, CA about 13 miles away from our house.  This wasn’t “the” big one, it was a 4.2, but was felt all around the Bay Area.   Now I feel like I am a true Bay Area gal, I’m not ready to experience the big one but I feel like I know what to expect in case another one comes our way.

I really think you experienced a shear rupture and quasistatic nucleation to dynamic seismic movements.
